Le 23 août 2000, la Direction Départementale des Affaires Sanitaires et Sociales (DDASS) du Lot (46) a été alertée par un médecin généraliste de la survenue d'un nombre anormalement élevé de cas de gastro-entérites dans un centre de vacances de la commune de Gourdon. Une enquête a permis d'écarter très rapidement une origine alimentaire. Les médecins libéraux de la commune contactés par la DDASS ont également signalé un nombre élevé de consultations pour gastro-entérite. Le 24 août 2000, les résultats de l'analyse de l'eau du réseau d'adduction, prélevée au centre de vacances, ont révélé une contamination microbiologique. La Préfecture du Lot a alors recommandé aux habitants de Gourdon de ne pas consommer de l'eau du robinet, ou de la consommer après ébullition (au moins cinq minutes).
Une investigation a été réalisée par la DDASS en collaboration avec la Cellule Inter-Régionale d'Epidémiologie d'Intervention (CIREI) du Sud-Ouest et l'Institut de Veille Sanitaire. Le nombre de consultations total et le nombre de consultation pour gastro-entérites au cours du mois d'août ont été recueillis auprès des médecins libéraux et du service d'urgence de l'hôpital de la commune afin de confirmer l'existence d'une épidémie. Une étude de cohorte rétrospective en population générale a été réalisée dans la commune afin de déterminer le rôle de l'eau du robinet comme source de contamination. Une enquête environnementale et des examens microbiologiques des selles et de l'eau du réseau d'adduction ont été réalisés.
Les résultats de cette étude ont permis d'une part, de confirmer qu'il s'agissait d'une épidémie de gastro-entérites à multiples germes et d'autre part, de mettre en évidence une forte association entre la consommation d'eau du robinet et la survenue de gastro-entérites chez les habitants de Gourdon. L'enquête environnementale a mis en évidence des dysfonctionnements des systèmes de chloration du réseau d'adduction. L'identification de virus humains dans les selles et dans l'eau du réseau d'adduction suggère une source de contamination fécale.

On August 23, the District Health Department of the Lot district was informed by a general practitioner of the occurrence of several cases of gastro-enteritis in a holiday camp in the city of Gourdon. A preliminary investigation concluded that a foodborne source was highly unlikely. The general practitioners of Gourdon, contacted by the district health office, had also noted an unusual high number of consultations for gastro-enteritis. On August 24, the analysis of water from the distribution system in the holiday camp, was shown to be contaminated by faecal organisms. Following these results, the inhabitants of Gourdon were advised not to consume any tap water or to consume it after 5 minutes of boiling.
An investigation was carried out by the district health office, in collaboration with the Interregional intervention epidemiology unit and the National Health Surveillance Institute. The number of consultations for all causes and for gastro-enteritis were obtained from the city's general practitioners and from the emergency department of the hospital, in order to confirm the existence of an outbreak ; A retrospective cohort study was carried out among the general population of Gourdon to determine the role of the water from the distribution system as source of contamination. An environmental investigation was carried out as well as microbiological examination of the water and of stool samples from cases.
The results of the investigation confirm the occurrence of an outbreak of gastro-enteritis due to multiple organisms. The occurrence of gastro-enteritis in inhabitants of Gourdon was strongly associated with the consumption of tap water. The environmental investigation identified a failure in the chlorinating system of the water distribution system. The presence of human calicivirus and rotavirus in stool samples of cases and in water from the distribution system suggest a faecal contamination.
