Des malaises inexpliqués sont survenus parmi le personnel d’un bloc central d’un hôpital de Marseille, lors d’une période de travaux en août 2005. La symptomatologie peu spécifique et rapidement résolutive s’est amplifiée au fil du temps pour impliquer les trois quart du personnel avec pour conséquence la fermeture des blocs opératoires.

La conjonction de multiples facteurs associés aux travaux réalisés dans ces blocs avec des problèmes de ventilation, des expositions faibles et incertaines à des polluants chimiques dans l’air, ainsi que, l’inquiétude légitime des personnels, l’altération des conditions de travail et la médiatisation de ces événements, s’est traduite par une auto-amplification des malaises et la constitution d’un « Sick Building Syndrome ».

Des mesures ont été prises à la réouverture du bloc central pour améliorer la ventilation et protéger les personnels.
Aucun malaise n’a été signalé dans les semaines suivant la réouverture du bloc.

Unexplained acute discomforts occurred among the staff of a surgery suite in a Marseilles hospital while it was
remodelled in August 2005. Unspecific and rapidly resolutive symptomatology increased with time to involve
three fourth of the members of the staff. Consequently, the operating rooms were closed.

The conjunction of multiple factors, associated to the surgery unit remodelling with ventilation problems, uncertain
and weak expositions to air chemical pollutants, understandable anxiety among the staff, alteration of working
conditions and press reporting these events, engendered a self-amplification of the acute health and comfort
effects and a situation of a Sick Building Syndrome.

Measures were taken at the time of the re-opening of the central surgery suite in order to increase ventilation and
to protect the occupants. No discomforts were reported in the weeks following the re-opening of the surgery suite.
