Hospitalisation of diabetic children in France based on data from the Entred-Enfant 2007 survey
As in many other countries, the incidence of diabetes is increasing in France, where it has virtually doubled over the past twenty years, rising from 8 cases per 100,000 children in 1988 to an estimated 15 cases per 100,000 in 2007. In individuals under the age of 20 years, between 2006 and 2009, the mean annual increase in the prevalence of treated diabetes varied between 2.4% and 3.9% according to age group and gender. The Entred-Enfant study was initiated following the conclusions of the expert assessment of epidemiological monitoring of paediatric diabetes, which InVS (Institut de veille sanitaire - French Institute for Public Health Surveillance) entrusted to INSERM (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale – French national health and medical research institute)...

Assessment of Vaccination coverage in France: Current Sources and Data
According to the French public health regulations, the French Institute for public health surveillance (Institut de veille sanitaire, InVS) is in charge of the follow-up and assessment of immunization coverage for all vaccinations included in the immunization schedule and in all target groups. In this work, we performed an analysis of the different sources of data that can be used to measure coverage in France, and compiled the most recent national and regional data for the different vaccines recommended in different age groups. Until the age of 15, coverage estimates are based on children health certificates and on routine school surveys. In adults, the lack of a routine data collection system explains the absence of estimates in this group and underlines the need for implementing new tools...

The French Heat and Health Watch Warning System: principles, fundamentals and assessment
The Heat and Health Watch Warning System (HHWWS) was implemented at the beginning of summer 2004. It is based on forecasts of biometeorological indicators for heatwave alerts that activate a defined answer in the framework of the National Heatwave Plan. A syndromic surveillance system enables to follow at day+1 the possible health impact of a heatwave. Throughout the years, the HHWWS has been assessed inside our Institute and by exterior organizations. Logistical and scientific improvements were brought. This report presents the principles of the HHWWS, the main steps of its implementation and assessment, and it summarizes the meteorological and health indicators followed from 2004 to 2012.The limits and perspectives of the system are mentioned, in particular the possibilities of evolution...

Programme for surveillance of work-related diseases (WRD). Results of the WRD Fortnights for 2006-2007-2008
Like other comparable developed countries, such as the United States or the United Kingdom, France has implemented epidemiological surveillance systems of occupational health. They aim to assess the impact of work on health, to highlight the sectors of activity, occupations, that present the greatest risks to health and to facilitate the observation and recording of new phenomena and their rapid investigation. The objective is to guide policies for prevention and compensation, to assess the effectiveness of preventive measures taken and to identify possible regressions. The employers are responsible to provide for the prevention and compensation of the occupational exposure’s effects. Therefore, occupational risk factors have become clearly separated from other health determinants. However...

Feasibility of an epidemiological surveillance system for workers occupationally exposed to engineered nanomaterials
Alerted by the possible impact of nanomaterials exposure on human health, the French Ministries of Health and of Labour asked the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS), supported by a multidisciplinary working group convened by the IReSp, to assess the feasibility of an epidemiological surveillance system of workers likely to be exposed to engineered nanomaterials. In response to this request, this report makes an inventory of the numerous uncertainties inherent to this field such as the question of definition, the wide range of nanomaterials, the identification of health events that could be monitored, the registration and collaboration of companies and workers likely to be concerned by nanomaterials and the metrological issues. After having reviewed the different epidemiological...

Indicators in Occupational Health - Fatal occupational injuries in France
The French government decided to develop a battery of indicators in order to monitor the French population’s health at national level. Since its creation in 1998, the Department of Occupational Health (DST) of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has developed several health surveillance programs aimed at producing regularly data about occupational risks in the French population. During the last years, different data sources have been established, and in 2009 the DST set up an occupational health indicators program. These indicators are established using several different data sources, and will be regularly available on the InVS website. The second report of this series is devoted to fatal occupational injuries. In this document, data on mortality by accident at work...
