RÉSUMÉ :
Le 6 avril 2012, 11 enfants issus de 3 classes différentes d’une école primaire du département du Nord ont été affectés par des symptômes digestifs (vomissements, douleurs abdominales, diarrhées) ou non spécifiques (céphalées) bénins et fugaces. La possibilité d’une exposition à un toxique a été évoquée, une odeur de détergent ayant été perçue dans une salle de classe. Le Sdis (Service départemental d'incendie et de secours) et le Smur (Service d'aide médicale urgente) sont intervenus et une partie des enfants a été adressée aux urgences du Centre hospitalier de Douai. Aucune cause évidente n’a été retrouvée et les signes ont rapidement disparu. Les 12 et le 13 avril, 6 enfants ont de nouveau présenté des symptômes similaires sans qu’une étiologie ne soit retrouvée. Les investigations épidémiologique et environnementale menées n’ont pas retrouvé d’élément objectif en faveur d’une exposition à un toxique. Il est plausible que quelques enfants aient présenté des symptômes liés à un épisode bénin de gastro-entérite aiguë ; la perception simultanée d’une odeur de détergent a pu inquiéter et entraîner des plaintes sans gravité chez d’autres enfants. L’ampleur des moyens déployés lors de l’intervention initiale, suscitant une inquiétude légitime, a probablement contribué à amplifier et à entretenir ce phénomène chez certains enfants.

On April 6th 2012, 11 children from three different classes of a primary school of the North department were affected by some digestive symptoms (vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea) or non-specific ones (headache). The symptomatology was mild and transient. The possibility of a toxic exposure was raised because a detergent smell had been perceived in a classroom. Sdis and Smur decided to send some of the children to the hospital. No obvious cause was found and the signs quickly disappeared. On April 12th and 13th, 6 children experienced again similar symptoms without any etiology found. Epidemiological and environmental investigations carried out did not show any objective evidence indicating a toxic exposure. It is plausible that some children experienced symptoms related to a benign acute gastroenteritis; the perception of a detergent smell at the same time could worry some other children and make them slightly complain. The importance of the resources deployed during the initial intervention, raising a legitimate concern, probably led to increase and maintain this phenomenon up for some of the children.
